Does anyone ever think about how fascinating memory is? We rely on memory so heavily that its nearly impossible to live without it. Our very survival depends on our ability to remember who we are, who others are, what is safe..the list goes on. Its importance can't be understood. People often believe that what they remember is absolute and true. It is quite disturbing to think that what we remember are in fact false. Many of our memories are completely wrong and yet we hold onto them dearly. We are so sure of what we remember.. we know what happened to us.. where we have been.. what someone has done.. or do we?
What do you think? do you believe memory is complete and true? or do you believe that it is not?
A study I once read stated that one can create "false memories" for oneself. For example: I used to think that when I was little, we lived on the coast. I have memories of doing little kid things... Those memories aren't real. We never lived on the coast. You can trick yourself into believing just about anything.
ReplyDeleteI've heard of that somewhere before!
DeletePeople can sometimes implant memories into other people's subconsciousness. For example, a group of eyewitnesses to a crime can very easily be led to believe they saw one thing when in fact, they are not quite sure of specific details.
ReplyDeleteExactly and that happens constantly!
